This is a very nice bottle and I love italian wines like this.

On opening of the bottle, nice nose of a nicely structured wine. The wine is clear, burgundy like in color, not heavy on the eyes, It took some time to opened up (left half a bottle so it will still have a chance to do more. Great initial taste of light tart cherries and a nice fall day earthiness. Like IK's bottle tonight, I could sniff this for some time Medium bodied but high toned acidty and great amounts tannins, this one should age like the barolo or more likely barberesco that it seems to be. This was a wonderful bottle, light, elegant like a burgundy but with a structure like a barolo.

I didn't mention that I had the rest of the bottle two nights later... gasp!!

In fact, it had gained a lot of weight without losing much of its lightness and acidity. Really much more enjoyable at this stage. Wow...I think I committed infanticide on this thing. Nice bottle.

I find I often like Chianti better on the second night when it seems to mellow a bit. Was this a Sangiovese-based wine?

Yes, I think it is full Sangiovese (or a small portion blended).
