California Viticultural Areas. Of the 115 American Viticultural Areas already established, 63 of them are entirely contained within the state of California. Sonoma leads the California counties with 12 viticultural areas located at least in part in the county. Napa has eight viticultural areas wholly or partially within its boundaries. The viticultural areas of Oakville and Rutherford are pending approval.
