Literally “table wine,” the least expensive and lowest quality of German wine. Tafelwein are made from grapes that are normally ripe.
There are two subcategories of tafelweins: Deutscher Tafelwein and Deutscher Landwein. Deutscher Tafelwein is a simple table wine that can come from four broad Tafelwine regions. Deutscher Landwein (special table wine) has more body and character than simple Tafelwein. This hearty, fresh regional wine is produced from grapes that have reached a higher degree of ripeness than its cousin, the Deutscher Tafelwein. This wine, whether dry or semi-dry is produced in one of the 17 Landwein regions.
