Wines produced from grapes grown in vineyards where there has been no application of synthesized chemical pesticides or fertilizers – either on the vines or in the soil – for at least one year before the vines were planted are labeled as “made from organically grown grapes.” In order to be eligible for the “organic” label, however, wines must be made from organically grown grapes and be free from any synthetically derived additives, the most important of which is sulfites.
See CCOF, sulfites.
