Meritage is a term used for both red and white American wines that are produced by blending traditional Bordeaux grape varietals. Created by an association of vintners to help consumers understand blended wines.
Meritage is defined as:
– A wine blended entirely from Bordeaux grape varieties. White varieties include Semillon, Muscadelle, and Sauvignon Blanc. Red varieties include Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.
– The winery’s best wine of its type.
– A wine produced and bottled by a U.S. winery from grapes that carry a U.S. appellation of origin, limited in production to a maximum of 25,000 cases per vintage.
