Baden is Germany’s third largest and most southern wine region. The vineyards of the Baden region stretch along a narrow strip that reaches through the famous Black Forest area from Heidelberg in the north to Lake Constance (Bodensee) in the south. The soils of Baden range from gravel, limestone and clay to loess, volcanic and shell-lime. While nearly 25% of the vineyards of this area are planted to Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir), the majority of vineyards contain Müller-Thurgau, Rölander (Pinot Gris), Gutedel, and Gewürztraminer. The area boasts of the highest per capita wine consumption in all of Germany – which some have called “a tribute to their winemakers.” The red wines range from velvety to firey and full-bodied. The white wines are best described as fresh, fragrant and aromatic.
