The World Atlas of Wine by Hugh Johnson and Jancis Robinson or Oxford Companion to Wine and Oxford Companion to the Wines of North America are good references past the novice stage. (For novices I recommend Wine for Dummies and Andrea Immer Robinson's Great Wine Made Simple.) It also pays to get more specialized books about your region of greatest interest such as a book on Burgundies or on Spanish wines, German wines, Italian wines, California wines, etc.

Hello Jennifer!

Welcome to the wineboard. While the Atlas and Oxford are both great resources, the Oxford is tough reading unless you are taking exams. The Atlas is much easier reading.

If you just want to know more about regions and wines of the world, my favorite book (if you can find it) is simply called Wine by Andre Domine. The edition I have is from 2001 and it is easy reading, concise and has beautiful photography along with it.

You might be able to find a used copy on Amazon.com. I have used mine so much that the spine has fallen off!

Hope that helps.

A really fun and informative book I read recently is "Oldman's Guide to Outsmarting Wine" by Mark Oldman. (Winner of the Goerges Duboeuf Wine Book of the Year award.) Lots of laughs and very good wine advice.

Right now I am reading two new books.

The first, "101 Wines Guaranteed to Inspire, Delight and Bring Thunder to Your World" is by Gary Vaynerchuk. This is a humorous but useful guide to exposing your palate to lots of different wines and styles -- see, for example, #68 'My, What a Big Pinot You Have!'

The second is "Wine on Tuesdays: Be a Serious Wine Drinker without Taking Wine Too Seriously" by Debra and Keith Gordon. This is a brand new book, just released, and I am enjoying it immensely. It's an easy read with very good information. It's a nice comprehensive little book, especially for anyone new to wine drinking. It may be a little too introductory for you, covering such basics as how wine is made, etc.

I recommend any of these three.
