In the face of our current winter chill, we had a small comparison of two De Bartoli Ports last night: the Old Boys Very Old Fine Tawny Port and the 8 Year Old Tawny Port.

Some things are self-evident. The 21 year old has considerably more depth and length and keeps opening and opening into a warm pecan aroma that settles onto one's lips and mouth and throat. The 8 year old is lighter, without the duration and intensity.

But it was surprising how, even in comparison, both ports still came across as very pleasing and agreeable. It was not a question that the older port was a "must have" when weighed against the younger one.

I am not sure that either possesses the stuff that one finds in the Seppelt, Chateau Reynella, or Hardy's Whiskers Blake ports. And neither is the heavenly manna of the De Bartoli Show Muscat. However, both are quite satisfactory.

Many ports in a storm.

I'll second the many ports in a storm comment.
