MrDutton, what was your final price on a shipped case of the Burgess to your location?

Drew

Got a case coming, so decided to track some down at my in-laws in ATL. Got 2 of the Burgess and 1 of the Rancho Zabaco. Side by side, the Burgess is a major league fruit bomb, with a superripe nose and palate bordering on candy-apple covering. The Zabaco is a nice everyday drinker too, but paled in comparison, IMHO--still good, just not as flamboyant as the Burgess.

Rad, you be bad! IMHO there`s no cherce. The Burg wins by 3 Zabs`. WW

- Drew - 01-01-2001

3 TO 1???? That much better?

Drew

- winoweenie - 01-02-2001

Drew, a speech impediment. Not 3 to 1 but IMHO a superior bottle. Much deeper fruit, and a much stronger finish. The polish of the Burgess is the big dif. Oh Well, Whadda` I Knows? WW

Don't take me wrong....this is a very good Zin. I was impressed with the very rich, ripe, deep, concentrated fruit and the wine's elegance. Also a little more food friendly wine. I just like the "over the top everything" about the Zabaco....body slam me every time and I'm happy.

WW, you read my reply incorrectly! I too greatly prefer the Burgess to the Rancho Zabaco.

And Drew, having had 2 bottles of the Burgess and 1 of the Zabaco, the Burgess is, IMHO, WAY more over the top than the Zabaco! Maybe my bottle of the Zab wasn't showing well, but the two Burgesses were knockouts. Glad I have a case coming, and at $9.99 ea, I just may splurge again!

That is, unless Foodie can get it for me cheaper at his new shop!

Rad, whats the shipping on a case of the Burgess to you? Also WW read your reply correctly....don't you understand the lingo? He said you be bad, that means you be good!

Popped the Burgess open tonight. Little oak, light fruit with great spice. A little more acidic than what I normally prefer. Overall I like the Rancho Zabaco better. The Heritage Vines offers a fuller experience with mouth filling fruit and a longer finish (if allowed to breathe). Where the Burgess was lighter in the mid-palate, the Zabaco was more filling in all areas of the mouth.
I just re-read the thread and found that the lines are evenly split between the two. A couple of you prefer the Burgess and (now) a couple prefer the Zabaco.
Drew, I'm in the same boat as you. Even without the price consideration, I will take my 97 Heritage Vines over the Burgess Zin any day.
My score: Zabaco = 88
Burgess = 87
Having said all that, I need to finish my bottle of Burgess Zin now... 8)

What the heck is going on here?!? I had another bottle of the 97 Burgess Zin tonight and - wow! Is this the same Burgess zin I had tasted and commented on just a few weeks ago? Two completely different bottles. This one's frangrance filled my living room and beckoned me to sip slowly so that I may prolong the enjoyment. This bottle showed much more fruit that lingered on the long finish. If the Burgess had more bottle consistency I would be more willing to give it higher marks. As it is, I will increase my original score of 87 to 89 for the Burgess, but still prefer the Zabaco since there isn't the wild bottle to bottle quality differences....

Tried of first one (of six) tonight with grillpanned porterhouse steak. It lived up to all the hype.

- Bucko - 03-04-2001

The Zabaco? The Burgess? Sharon Stone?

Bucko, it was J-Lo, not Sharon Stone

The Burgess. Sorry we went by the title, and didn't check the side trips.

Popped the second to last '97 Burgess with Cheddarburgers and avocado loaded salad last night. Wonderful! It (the zin) keeps getting better and better. Burgers good too.

- Innkeeper - 09-25-2001

Popped our last one tonight. Wonderful. Many thanks to Mike Dutton for spliting the case with us. Sorry, for those of you who missed it.

Don't thank Mike -- you know how he puffs up!
