I need to choose a wine to go with my wedding menu. I am only serving one wine with dinner. My Italian family prefers red wine, but I'd be interested in hearing which general white or red wine you would recommend (note: hotel selections aren't that specific, so I'd appreciate generic advice, like choose a Cabernet Sauvignon, or choose a Zinfandel).

My menu is: tri-color tortellini in cream sauce; a mixed green salad with brie and champagne dressing; chicken stuffed with fontina and spinach and served with au jus sauce, baby asparagus, roasted potatoes and carrots; golden cake with raspberry mousse filling, served with vanilla ice cream in chocolate cup with raspberries on side.

Also, has anyone ever heard of Burlwood?

Thanks.

Hi Gettingmarried, and welcome to the Wine Board. Need a little more information here. What are the guests going to be drinking before dinner? Will there be a Champagne toast? Knowing your location will help making available recommendations. Are you really hard on the point of only one wine? There are almost the same number of people who prefer red and white. Your menu could be supported with either a light red or a beefy white. Both wines would need a good belt of acidity (crispness) to handle some of the menu items, e.g. salad and asparagus.

I am limited, by budget, to choosing one wine with dinner.

I will have an open bar, so the guests will be drinking whatever they choose before the meal. Then there will be a champagne toast.

In that case would recommend a Barbera d'Asti. It's 1. Red; 2. Italian; 3. Light (in the lower priced bottlings); 4. Acidic. 5. Well liked, including frequently by people who only like white wine. One dealer we deal with has bottlings ranging from $8.44 to $74.68 each. One we like that would do the trick is Bersano a light Barbera d'Asti that runs $136.71 a case. There are less expensive ones as well.

Thanks for the helpful advice. There's a Barbera D'Asti on the list I can choose from. We aren't allowed to bring in our own wine or order from outside the list.

I'll keep your other suggestions in mind for the future.
