from Alexander Valley, CA
$27.99 on sale at Bassin's (normally $31.99)
13.6% alcohol
Dark purple color with dark red at rim, opaque.
Nose of dark fruits including black currants and blackberries.
Taste of dark plumskins, black currants, dark Bing cherries, light touch of pepper.
Long finish. Tannic edge when first opened and sipped. Tannic edge mellowed a bit with breathing time and in combination with food.
Intense, concentrated fruit core.
Can be enjoyed now or in next 2-3 years at least. Drank with stuffed green pepper the first night and with broiled sirloin tip steak with grilled vegetables on top (red and green bell peppers, onion, and tomato) the second night.
From label: 95% Zinfandel, 5% Carignane
Old vines. Grown on sloping red soil, produces a small but intense crop of Zinfandel and Carignane. Bouquet of rich plum and Bing cherries with flavors of ripe raspberries, currants, vanilla and spice.
Suggests serving with grilled salmon, marinated flank steak, veal scallopini, or vegetable lasagna. I would second flank steak or vegetable lasagna but not the grilled salmon or veal scallopini.
If giving this a rating, I would rate it as 17.5 or 18 on a 20-point scale (88-90 on a 100-pt. scale). Very good to outstanding.
I liked this better than the Rosenblum Rockpile Road Vineyard Zin but it also costs about $4.00 more per bottle.
