1999 Fetzer, Merlot, Eagle Peak, California, $10, 100,000+ cases. The nose has ripe black cherry, cinnamon and vanilla aromas. Medium-bodied, with black fruit flavors, mild toasty oak nuances and modest tannins on the long, crisp finish. Good value.

Bottle given to me by a friend...at least I thought so until I opened the bottle. This Peak 'peaked' before it ever hit the barrels, much less the bottle.

Aromas (same as noted by Bucko) were muted & heavy on the wood side. Decent dark fruit flavors, but too much "hardwood flooring" for me & an astringent edge.

Can usually salvage mediocre wines into decent sangria, but this one failed.

Yep, that wine is meant to drink early before the fruit fades and the oak is all that is left.
