I couldn't find the 96'that Innkeeper high fived in a previous post but found a bottle of the 97' Fleur du Cap Merlot. I should have looked harder for the 96'! Dark translucent garnet color. Vegetal/wet cardboard tones on the nose. Astringent at mid palate with bing cherry like fruit that finishes bitter with vegetal overtones.

Agree! Hard to believe they were made by the same company, and a big company at that. Wish we knew which year was aberrational.

I don't have my records with me, but if my memory serves me correctly, 91 & 92 were the years to get. I'll check and make sure.

I don't know about their Merlots, but their Pinotage (1993 is what you find in the stores these days)is a pretty good bottle for the price ($7.99).

Cheers,

Sorry Drew, I had trouble finding this post again to respond about the vintages. Even though South Africa has been making wines and ports for some 300 years, it's still a country where you kind of take a chance on what your going to get in the bottle. As far as most recent vintages, I found out that both the '95 & '97 vintages were supposed to be great for cabernet, and 96' was supposed to be terrible for it. I couldn't find out any vintage info specifically on merlot or pinotage. I think merlot is still fairly new to South Africa.

The Ultimate Encyclopedia of Wine by Robert Joseph gives some inside information as to how the wine industry in South Africa was affected by their polital problems during the later half of this past century. Good reading for you wine history buffs out there!
