I'm trying to buy a very good merlot for a gift, but am not familiar with this. Someone recommended a bottle of a 1994 Arrowhead (something like that name) that goes for $65/bottle. My max is $75. Is this worth it, what do you recommend?

I think Duckhorn makes awesome merlots. See if you can get a 1997 Three Palms Vineyards for $60 or a 1996 Howell Mountain for $50.

these were released in the spring so they may be hard to find. I listed the retail prices which most stores stick with....

For that kind of money you would get a much better value with a Pomerol or St Emilion. You would also get a lot more than a mouthful of red oak.

Patricia, try the 97' Matanzas Creek Merlot for about $50. I think it's a wonderful California Merlot.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I've just been told that a Beringer Merlot ('95) would be the best. What are your opinions on this?

- Bucko - 12-22-2000

Beringer is a nice $35-40 Merlot with a $75 suggested retail price.

I kinda liked the 1994 Cafaro, the 1994 Pahlmeyer, the 1994 RSV Reserve and the 1994 Liparita Howell Mountain Merlots........

They might be hard to find (at least they are about impossible to find here anymore). If you run across any one of them, give one or more of them a try!
