Does anybody else like HUGE Merlots? Tonight we picked a Merlot over a Cabernet Sauvignon because we were looking for something to go with fillet steaks, and thought that would be more appropriate. Well, forget genteelness, the one we picked without previous tasting turned out to be a blockbuster, and we were not disappointed. It was a 1996 Fleur Du Cap, Merlot (SA) put out by The Berghelder, Ltd, Stellenbosch. We got it at Tanza's down in Fall River for around $10 1/2. It tastes like an American priced at $25 to $30. It had abundent up front fruit, with gobs of acid and tannin. Loved it.

Though I've had a lot of different merlots, there haven't been too many that have really impressed me as much as a cabernet does. Probably the last one I've had that I thought was decent, was the 97' Santa Alica from Chile. Wine Spectator rated it 87 or 88 points, and for under $10, thought I'd give it a try. Wasn't disappointed!

I'll try to find the one your recommending. That's funny though, I didn't think you were allowed to drink merlot, Innkeeper. Is that not one of the "three evil grapes that must be destroyed?" Do the brothers at WITHSTAND know that you actually recommend merlot with a food? I hope they don't revoke you membership! Hahaha...hehehe...oh, my sides starting to hurt!
