I am a total novice when it comes to wine but especially Merlot. I would like to give a bottle of merlot to a friend for the holidays but I am not sure of what a "good" merlot is. I am looking in the $25-$30 range and the person I am giving it to know wines quite well. Any help would be appreciated.

Under this same heading of Merlot, if you choose "Show topics for the last year", you'll find several discussions on various Merlots. One that pops up quite often is Blackstone: they offer one wine in the $10 category, and another in the $18-$20 range.
The latter is Blackstone Napa Valley and is reported to be even better than the former, which I've found to be excellent.

Thank you very much. I appreciate the quick response and the help. I have myself not been a very big fan of merlot but I have tried one that I loved. I unfortunately do not know who made it but it had a sweat taste to it. Like I said I am very much a novie and I have not developed a very extensive tste just yet. I recently joined a wine club that sends California wines (2 per month) and I have been trying one of the bottles and saving the other. Again thank you very much and I will look at both prior postings and the Blackstone Napa Valley.

Hi Jason and welcome to the Wine Board. If I were thee would beat feet over to Convito Italiano and ask them for Ronchi Di Manzano, Colli Orientali Del Friuli, Merlot ($17.00). This is a dynamite merlot, the equal of many local ones costing much, much more. If the folks at Convito don't have it, ask for something else in the ballpark. They are very helpful and won't try to fool you.
