2000 Helderberg Winery, Pinotage, Stellenbosch, S.A. ($9 SHWC). This one could be the value of values. Came in the totally mixed twelve pack from Southern Wines in early spring. Dark mahogany color to the eye. It showed berries, spice, fruitcake, and even bananas on the nose and upfront. It showed rich, dense, firm, and chewy complexity across the palate, and a great finish. Believe it or not, could not detect any oak in it! Matched it with broiled kielbasa, sauteed potato cakes, and nuked frozen spinach. All went together wonderfully.

I tried a NZ Pinotage yesterday: 2002 Soljans Estate, Gisborne Pinotage. It came as a suggestion from a local retailer who said NZ has been producing some excellent Pinotage's, some better than those in South Africa.

I haven't had many Pinotage's -- but what stood out about the wine was a slight gamey flavor. Maybe a bit smoky. This Pinotage was also slightly oaked which rounded the wine out nicely. Overall very delicious and definitely something different. Goes for $10 or so.
