Have been into Barbera lately. For light ones you can hardly beat 1997 Bersano, Barbera d'Asti, Costalunga, $12.15 www.popswine.com ; and 1998 Bonny Doon, Ca'del Solo, Monterey, Barbera, $15.00 www.wine.com . They are both berry, berry, berry good yet well balanced as well. Great for summer pasta, pizza, burgers, etc. Had the Bersano with grillpanned cube steak, corn on the cob, and salad last night. The Bonny Doon has a little more heft, while the Bersano is the classic light style that we've been recommending for beginners. For one with a little more edge, try 1996 Monte Volpe, California, Barbera, $11.00 www.wine.com. Even though this baby carries the California appellation, it is definitely old vine stuff, primarily from way up north in the Ukiah district. Our kind of wine, with a great price. Goes with almost anything a Rhone/Syrah would marry with, including grilled lamb chops, grilled and tomatoed eggplant, and things of that ilk.

Try the Enotria Barba as well if you can. It too has a Berry nice invitation, & greets your mouth with even more. Very full bodied. From Mendocino. Should be around $ 11.00. I will definately try the Monte Volpe that you've suggested. K

Hey IK, glad to hear that you're still enjoying those Barberas! Did you ever try any of those that my wife and I tried (and reviewed here) a couple of months ago?

I'm so glad that today is the last day of August! My wife has put me on a monthly wine budget, and with a new month dawning, I get to go out and play, buying some more!

The alumni at U of Calif. Bakersfield has a fund-raising drive and arranged with the u of Calif Fresno School of oenolpgy to donate 100 cases of their latest Barbera for sale. This wine has won best of show, triple-gold etc and my understanding is it`s a dynamite Barbera. The cost is 170 bucks a case, TAX DEDUCTIBLE, and Robert Miller of the Uof Cal, Santa Clara, one of Jerry`s Kids assured me it was dynamite. Jill Ford @ first class1,csubak.edu or phone 661-664-3211 has confirmed my order. Any of you interested e or call Jill and see if any be left. winoweenie

Thanks for the info WW, and RAD, haven't been able to find any of the Italians you recommended. Maybe when we hit the Apple in early October we will. In the meantime here's a truly great Californian. 1997 Easton, Shenandoah Valley California, Barbera, $18.00 www.wine.com . This baby is made from Cooper Ranch grapes in the Amador hills. Offers ripe berries and plums upfront, continues with oak softened acidity in the middle, and has a finish to die for. It is the equal of upscale Italians at twice the price. Body approaches full. Had it with grilled loin lamb chops last night and it married splendidly. It is also the kind of wine you pull and quaff when a special friend stops by. Right now it is our favorite (non layed down) wine.

Enjoyed another big one last night, also with lamb with no problem. In fact, terrrific. It was 1996 Fife, California, Barbera, www.wine.com $16.00. That completes my order of California Barbera from them ealier this year. A slam dunk.

Had a great day today. Took our two older grandkids, at their request, to Olive Garden in BanGOR. Had a nice mid-afternoon dinner with a couple of glasses of their house PG, which was nice. Then after an evening interlude, we returned home, and since it was cool (yes cool) we built a small fire in the fireplace. As the kids toasted marshmallows, we quaffed a bottle of the '97 Easton Barbera. It now offers layer after layer of complexity to all the other goodies it previously displayed. For a four year old wine it is almost unbelievable. Tanks heaven we still have two more in the rack.

Unfortunately the only source we can find for the '98 is eVinyard.com who won't ship to us, and the winery won't either. Does anybody else know another source?

IK, I've seen it at 2 shops here in NYC: Crossroads Wines (don't have # handy) and Union Square Wines (212-675-8100 or http://www.wineaccess.com/store/unionsquarewines).

Have no idea about shipping laws btw NY and ME, but know that it's tough to get wines shipped here, so it may be equally hard getting them out. Perhaps foodie could arrange something for you!

Celebrated the big six two last night with burgers and barbera (Easton). Thanks to the assistance of an anonymous fellow boardmember am now plugged into a sources for this one of my favorite wines. As a matter of fact recently received, not only a sample of the '99 Barbera, but eleven other Easton wines, mostly Rhone types. Look for TNs on these over the coming months.
