Catching up on some of my Nantucket Wine Festival notes. This was a small tasting in a private Nantucket home. Wines presented by Helen Gallo Bryan (not of the famous Gallo family.)

1999 BAROLO BRUNO GIACOSA DOGC
Giacosa is very traditional and uses larger casks with neutral oak, 4-10 year old casks. 100% Nebbiolo grape. Complex nose with some secondqary aromas. Semi-transparent. Slight hint of raisin or prune but not detrimental to overall flavors. Perhaps my first Barolo of sufficient age to have mellowed somewhat.

2003 PRUNOTTO BUSSIA BAROLO Antinori family owns Prunotto. Bussia Vineyard is in Monforte d'Alba. 10% aged in barriques; the remainder is transfered to large oak barrels.
Semitransparent. Cherries and floral elements on nose and palate (violets perhaps). Not getting the spices suggested by presenter.

2002 TUA RITA PERLATO DEL BOSCO IGT
70% Sangiovese, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Syrah Province of Livorno. Definitely a more Sangiovese nose than anything else. Vinous, leggy. 2002 was not a great vintage in Italy but still a good wine.

2003 PODERE POGGIO SCALETTE IL CARBONAIONE, Tuscan IGT
Alt Valle Della Greve
100% Sangiovese di Lamole, a low-yielding clone of Sangiovese
90-year-old vines
Vittorio Fiore is the winemaker and this is his only wine.
Carbonaione "carbon" because wine is so dark.
Great extraction from the skins. The estate started making this as an IGT but could now use the term "Chianti Classico" although it does not contain any white grapes.

2005 CONTADO AGLIANICO DEL MOLISE, DOCG
More pronounced nose than the following wine.
Aglianico means Hellenica or Greek--Romans or Greeks probably brought the grape in from
Greece. Very aromatic. Organic winery. 100% Aglianico grap. Ricardo Cotarella is a consultant to the winery. Sees new oak. Helen mentions minty, eucalyptus nose.

1999 MASTROBERARDINO RADICI TAURASI RISERVA DOGC
Area near Pompeii. Quite mellow and smooth. Less new oak treatment than the previous wine. All indigenous varieties. Long finish. Retails for about $85-$100. Must be grown in village of Taurasi to be called Taurasi.

Very enjoyable tasting as I try to add to my scanty knowledge of Italian wines.
