This is a judement call re commercial posts but I will not give prices and I thought many of you would be interested in knowing these wines are in the states at last:

WINE EXPO Winery of the Year:
Azienda Agricola Pepe, Torano Nuovo, Abruzzo

Three years ago we invited WINE EXPO-isti to a special tasting with over twenty winemakers from some of Italy's top producers and not a
week has gone by since without someone calling up and demanding "Yeah, Yeah, Brunello, Barolo, Amarone, all very nice but WHERE THE
HELL is the PEPE!!!!!" What makes these wines so special? Emidio Pepe is the Orson Welles of the Abruzzi (although he actually looks like Clint Eastwood and Sean Connery morphed into one hard as nails, take no prisoners, "I want him on MY side" kind of guy), everything must be done HIS way because he knows it is the RIGHT way: totally organic and manual agriculture, pressing the grapes with the feet of his beautiful daughters (more on them later!), fermenting the wines in glass lined tubs, bottling them by hand (without racking or filtration) THEN aging them for up to thirty years at the winery before decanting each bottle (after standing up for two months and only his wife is allowed to do this!) into a new bottle when it is actually sold. This results in wines of amazing quality and diversity (Sr. Pepe considers consistency in wine from year to year not only undesirable but dishonest and spares no words castigating producers who achieve this!) ranging from Syrah / Zin style spice bombs in ripe vintages to deeeeeeep meat and earth scented marvels in more balanced vintages. We have been working on bringing you these wines for what seems like decades but now they are finally here:

Emidio Pepe Montepulciano d'Abruzzo

1997 1994 1993 1985 1983

1982 1980 1979 1975

AND, for all of you celebrating "W"'s new suit, there is the added bonus that the Commies who run the Gambero Rosso took Senior Pepe completely out of their books after he ran for local office on the "Mussolini was a liberal" party ticket so you know he is your kind of guy. GGGG!!!!!
