In my ongoing investigation of Aglianico, I picked this up from a shop near my apartment. The very nice sales lady, who I like but disagree with on wine a lot, told me she wouldn't recommend it because it's "VERY dusty." I bought one immediately.

Well, she was somewhat right. A deep violet in the glass, with red berryish fruit and funk on the nose. Palate is medium bodied, quite funky and dirty tasting, with a somewhat bitter finish and a few too many tannins. The fruit seemed rather hidden in all that. I've let the second half of the bottle sit for a while with Private Preserve and maybe something will have developed when I get home tonight. The sales lady was perhaps right about this one.

$9, 13% alc., IGT from Basilicata.

You didn't mention acid. If there was enough to detect, the bottle might have improved with a couple of years in the rack. I know it was a $9 bottle of wine, but if you have the room, sometimes aging these out pays big dividends.

I think the acid is there, IK. After a couple days I tried it again and the tannins and funk had mellowed out a little, but still it seem sort of disjointed, out of whack. Maybe I will get a couple more bottles and see if they come together with some age.

I gave a glass to a friend last night, and he said, "it's like eating a pile of mulch!" But he was entirely against it, either.

The enologist of these wines is Donato D’Angelo.

He should be the same from the very famous, indeed, winery D'Angelo, on of the most representative from the Basilicata region.

Their "base" aglianico is one of greatest "quality-price" to buy here in Italy !!!

Thanks, Fabio--I'll keep an eye out for D'Angelo wines.
