1998 Venica, Merlot, Collio D.O.C. ($15.00). Oh, my goodness. Inky in the glass, with blackness on the nose and upfront; berries, currents, et al. Greatest impact on the palate with 79 year old vines and commensurate earthiness contributing to the complexity. And the finish; I won't tell. A fantastic value, and in a world by itself and themselves.

What did it marry with? How about a merlot (Sutter Home) marinated porterhouse steak, patted dry, rubbed with OO and Morton Rub, and grilled over charcoal with mesquite chips.

IK, over a period of months you've indelibly inscribed the term "Collio" in the single cell mental space that I have dedicated for the subject of merlot. So, where do you find those jewels...locally or through a specific internet vendor? Thanks. cp

Pops in New York, and Convito Italiano in Chitown. Both ship. Wish Roberto would get into them. Foodie is trying.

P.S. Don't worry about Pops being sold out. Just order and they will come. It is no mystery to me that they go through their Collios as fast as they get them in.

Hey, we have LOTS of wine from the Collio, we just don't do Merlot (at all). Try some Schippettino or Refosco (what Gianni Venica is REALLY famous for)..... We got a bunch of Miani in today, amazing but biggu$ bucku$!

IK, what do you mean "foodie is trying?" I turned you on to Collio Merlot. The problem in my shop, however: Merlot is a dirty word and those who think not will not pay the Collio price, mainly because they are stuck in what California has done to the variety. In Collio Merlot is far more than the normal one-dimensional varietal it is elsewhere. They have been growing it for more than centr'anni.

On the way home yesterday, stopped in the Portland Market and picked up a well aged shell steak, a fresh as a daisy eggplant, and some nice mushrooms. Grillpanned the steak, covered the slices with the 'rooms, and batter fried the eggplant to accompany. Served with my last Venica. Went straight to the puter and ordered more from Pops, back order and all. Do it, too.
