2001 HRM Rex-Goliath, Free Range, Central Coast, Pinot Noir ($8 Blue Hill Wine Shop). This is the wine with the picture of the once famous 47 lb rooster on the label. A great under $10 pinot. It is a quite different wine than the Pepperwood Grove or Villa Mt Eden (both wonderful in their own rights) Pinots at the same price point.

It gives you decidedly non pinot eye in the glass. It is very dark, in fact opaque. It gives you black cherries on the nose and upfront. A lot of fruity complexity and pizzazz crosses you palate at 13.5% alcohol, but does not give you heat. It finishes nicely and is as smooth as a baby's bum.

We matched it with half inch cubes of leftover smoked pork in a paprika, nutmeg, sour cream sauce, and spinach. It all went together splendidly.

Your description makes this wine sound like a minimal (75%) Pinot Noir. I am curious to know what the blend is?

They say it's 100% pinot noir. http://www.rexgoliath.com/rexgoliathpinotnoir.pdf

Not exactly Bucko's kind of pinot, but it was delightful with a plateful of leftovers tonight.

2002 ($7 Blue Hill Wine Shop). Price has gone down! Very interesting wine. Looks like a Syrah. Tastes like a Cru Beaujolais. Not unpleasant in any way. Matched with mid-week pork chops and spinach. Very nice.
