2002 Domaine Des Comte Lafon, Mothelie Les Duresse

One of my more favourite low cost burgs (typically around $40). Medium red/garnet in colour. Nose is reserved and of older wood, slight Chinese medicinal aromas, ripe cherries, menthol and herbs. While solid, slightly one dimensional, but remains supple, restrained, and exhibited a slightly rougher tannic/rustic style. Wine has a good high tone acidity.

2002 Louis Latour, Chateau Corton Grancey, Grand Cru
For a Grand Cru, we had expected that it would be shut down but this was showing really well. That said, our friend noted, it took the better part of 4 hours to really start to open up and by then…well…it was all gone. In fact, it was the first bottle to be finished which generally means that it was the group’s favourite without pointing. Nice bottle, dark garnet, ripe, great round texture in the mouth, great density of fruit, cherries, and a reticent if not slightly reserved nose. But the end of the evening, this thing was showing off its muscles.

2004 G. Roumier, Morey Saint Denis, Clos de la Bussiere
Vintage variation showed significantly here. The nose was the most interesting of the three, light and ethereal, complex but the wine lacked the power of the ’02 wines, especially tasting this after the Corton Grancey which has it in spades. The most acidic of the three, it had some rougher tannins and it also gained in density over time but ultimately became a good but not excellent burgundy.

Too bad that the Roumier was slightly disappointing. I'm sure it did not come cheap and Morey-St-Denis wines can be really nice drinking in good vintages or with proper aging.
