2004 Louis Latour, Domaine de Valmoissine Pinot Noir, Vin de Pays Coteaux du Verdon ($12.99 NH Liq Store). This wine is available for up to $3 less elsewhere. Alcohol level: 13%. Here is what our good friend Tom Stevenson has to say about it and we agree:

“This stunning wine is easily the greatest Vin de Pays Pinot Noir ever produced. It could be the greatest Vin de Pays that has ever been produced from any grape variety, but it is not possible or fair to compare wines of totally different grapes and styles and say which is best. I am certain, however, that it is the most exciting Vin de pays I have ever tasted. It is so soft and silky, with such a purity of fruit and so much finesse that few Burundians would believe this is not a Burgundy, and a fine one at that. It’s not cheap for a Vin de Pays, but it is better than many Burgundies twice its price.”

We matched it with sautéed boneless pork chops, green beans almandine, and our everyday rolls.

Sounds very nice, IK. And a bargain too!

We've had this on a few occasions, most recently at a Christmas party on Sunday. Agree that it is quite nice for the price. I recall just a bit of heat on the finish, but that could have just been because many folks serve red wines too warm at parties. Good go-to Pinot Noir for daily drinking, though. Runs $14 down here.

Edit -- Have no idea how the default smiley became a wink.
