We sampled ten '98 or '99 red burgundies at this tasting to benefit the American Red Cross. Of the two 1999 Ecard Savigny-Les-Beaune wines we sampled, my preference was for the Serpentiers which I thought showed more promise than the Peuillets. I have a couple bottles of the Serpentiers already that I had planned to open in 2002 but I may save one or both until 2003 since it still seemed a little tannic. The Peuillets was a darker color and was preferred by some of the wine shop staff.
Both were selling for $34.99 a bottle.
I also enjoyed a '98 Dugat-Py Gevrey Vielles Vignes (old vines) at $69.99 per bottle. It had a beautiful aroma, tasted soft and mild, and faded a bit on the finish. Two bottles that were well accepted by most of the attendees were the 1999 Arlaud Gevrey Combottes and the 1999 Arlaud Morey-St.-Denis Ruchots. (both priced at $59.99 but available at a slight discount that evening). I had sampled both at a previous tasting and went back and forth before deciding I preferred the Ruchots. Same decision at this tasting.
I had purchased the Ruchots at sale price before and bought an additional bottle last night. The '98 Arlaud Clos St. Denis ($71.99) was nice but not as impressive as the 1999 from the same vineyard that we had sampled at an earlier tasting.
