Went to a Burgundy tasting held by Larry Bender and Randy Sheahan and tasted through a few Burgs all from the Cote de Nuits

(1) Chevillon Bourgogne Rouge – mid deep garnet in colour, looked rather rich compared to the rest of the other wines. Solid cherry, strawberry nose. On palate, solid fruit front and center, plump, juicy, with a nice high level of acidity to it, and some cedar as well. Showing very well for a base level Bourgogne, lots going on.

(2) 1998 Joseph Roty Marsanny Ouzelois – Corked

(3) 2004 Domaine St. Martin Fixin Hervelet Premier Cru Brickish Garnet already, DEEP OAK,…. A bit too much here for me, not that it was too much but there is not enough wine there to ever absorb it all. Beyond wood, herby nose, and on the palate, nice pommogranite, beffy and tannic, and high acidity.

(4) 2004 Daniel Bocquenet Vosne-Romanee – Nicely opening up in the glass, good solid nose and showing very well, perfumey wood, cherries, beginnings of complexity and good round mouth feel. Pretty focused wine here.

(5) 2004 Robert Chevillon Nuits-Saint-George Le Caille Premier Cru, lighter opaque brickish garnet colour, fruit is a bit hidden but reasonable balance, definitely showed that it came from a better vineyard.

(6) 2004 Hudelot-Noellat Les Petits Vougeot Premier Cru, the third 04 in a row that showed that it was a lighter vintage. Brickish red in colour, wine has a nice minerally scent to it, fruit also a bit hidden but very nice balance.

(7) 1998 Jean Louis Trapet Gevry-Chambertin Petite Chapelle, drying out, high tannins, very austere, almost rusty,

Thanks for the notes. I'm a fan of Chevillon and Boquenet. Had one wine from Hudelot-Noellat that was a bit of a disappoinment but can't judge on just one tasting.

I got a case of the '05 Bocs Vosne Romanee on order but could not get my hands on any Chevillion at all. Allocations were tiny this year.
