I know it sounds strange, but we have been asked to provide a good wine for an appetizer at an upcoming party. Appetizer is an artichoke relish and I have no idea where to begin. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the board, T. Artichokes in general call for a white wine, and in our house that would be a Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling or Pinot Grigio. But the word "relish" is a complication. It would really depend on how the dish was prepared, what other dishes would accompany the relish, the theme of the dinner, etc. I'd probably default to the SB, in lieu of any additional information. But if the dinner is to feature Italian foods, go with a Pinot Grigio.

I recently had a great red burgundy with salmon and a side of artichoke...it worked well. Again, what is in teh relish and how is it prepared?

Highly recommend a sauvignon blanc from the Loire region of France. Ask for a Sancerre, preferably one that is three or four years old.

Artichokes are difficult to match with wine -- they tend to make the wine taste metallic. IK's suggestion is one of the few that seem to work out O.K. In addition to Sancerre, you could try a Menetou Salon, Quincy or Pouilly Fume (all made from Sauvignon Blanc from the Eastern Loire Valley, near Sancerre).
