What kind of food will you be serving? If you don't know, we can work with some generalities and get you some versatile stuff. The next important question is what is your price range?

all italian.. so most likely there will be lasagna, pizza and the like... price range is below $20.

Believe it or not Chianti is still a great wine to have with American style Italian food. To kick it up a notch go with Chianti Classico. To really impress your friends get some Rosso D'Montalcino (made from the much the same grapes) that will eat up most of your $20 per bottle.

Well, I would also go with a Valpolicella or a Salice Salentino. Both around $10.

Will there be anything with a white cream sauce? If so, a good Pinot Grigio will work as well.

The trouble is that there are multitudes of Italian dishes beyond lasagna, pizza, et al; it's debatable if the lasagna we know in this country is even a true Italian creation (I have had lasagna in Italy that bears no resemblance to the heavy-handed stuff restaurants serve across America). But if what you say is all the food will be, then by all means go for the Chianti, Salice and Pinot Grigio. Can't go wrong.
