HI All -
First of all, let me state that I do not know anything about wine. However, my brother is of an amature wine enthusiast. I have this idea to give him 3 bottles of wine for his wedding along with a wine cooler. My idea is to label each for him to drink on one of his anniversaries. (i.e. one for his 1st, one for his 5th, and one for the 10th anniversary.) I'd really appreciate it if you had recommendations for wines that will be aged appropriately for each time period and are excellent wines. I'm looking to spend rought $200-$250 on the wine give or take. I am thinking that he is more of a red person than white. We were thinking maybe of a Port for the 10th anniversary?? I live in DC. Thanks so much in advance!!

Sarah -

You could ask 1000 different wine-lovers that question and get 1000 different answers. Even if you could extract meaningful data out of the cacophony, not being famaliar with wines you could have the devil of a time tracking down any one particular bottle.

My advice: find an upscale wine store near you, NOT a liquor-store-that-also-sells-wine. Chat up the salespeople there, and if they seem knowledgeable, have them make some suggestions. I'm sure they'll be happy to help you spend your 250 dollars.

Good luck.

Pardon my wet blanket on this idea, but unless they have optimum storage for such a trove, it would be like a gift of expensive rose bushes to an apartment dweller. To be any good some years hence, the wines must be stored properly for all those years leading up to the given anniversary.

Hotwine,

Thanks for your concern. I was planning to give him a 30 bottle wine cooler along with the wine. Although I do not know if it will be a problem during the delivery, etc before he puts them in the cooler that the temperature will not be moderated. Your comments are appreciated.

Thanks,
Sarah

Sarah,

There are several excellent wine shops in Washington (Calvert Woodley comes to mind). I suggest you take the metro and talk to one of their resident wine experts about your ideas and see what their recommendations might be. You should also mention what your budget is so they'll have an idea what to suggest.

Just a quick question. Do you actually live in DC or Reston?

Thanks for the Store recommendation. I actually live in Reston, VA.

Since you live in Reston, look for Total Wine & More in McLean, Sterling or Chantilly.
