<Sniff> My first post on our new Island.

1995 Grand Puy Lacoste: Inky purple. Wow - massive and intense nose of very sweet crushed raspberries. On the palate, a sweet viscous attack leads into a delicious huge proportioned wine; the fruit buries the tannins which are lurking in the background. Finish was a bit restained and showed some heat - no doubt due to its youth. Solid "A" highly recommended.

1995 Goldwater (New Zealand) cab/merlot: Showing nowheres near the perfume of the terrific 1994, this wine packs floral and licorice flavors with wild berry flavors. It has put on weight since last tried and seems to be improving and gaining complexity as it ages. Nice structure and finish, strong A- rating.

1978 Grand Puy Lacoste: Huge nose of grilled nuts, leather and earth; palate shows lots of leather and earthiness as well with a dark cherry core; super finish. Still showing some tannin but drinking beautifully. A-

1978 La Tour Haut Brion (Graves, and NOT to be confused with Latour Haut Brion): Still a deep dark garnet showing little signs of its age. Complex nose of tobacco, meat and shoe leather. Magnificent mouthfeel on this wine with a rich dense smoky earth core, mature roasted nut flavors and some herbaceousness and dark fruits. Beautiful wine to chew on. Long lingering finish. What a treat. "A"

1970 Louis Martini Special Selection cabernet: An orphan with a low neck fill, this wine showed sinewy raisiny flavors on the nose and sweet candied dry fruits on the palate. Fully mature, but a bit one dimensional, it was blown away by the Bdx. and fell apart in the decanter after about 20 mins. B at best.

1937 Calon Segur: The last of the oddball lot picked up at auction. Still a healthy red core with bricking at the edge. The wine smelled great right out of the bottle, showing tulip and rose flavors on the nose. On the palate. Still showing tanning, wonderful balance between the floral components and solid dark cherry and nut flavors. Impeccable balance, this wine like the 1911s consumed recently also lived for close to an hour after opening. The wine is a testament to the "old way" of making Bdx., the greatness of older Calon Segurs and an awesome example of how even in an off year such as '37 a well made wine which is well stored can still prove enjoyment. Wine gets a solid A, add a + for the experience.

I had the following New Year's eve:

(1)Dagenaux, Pouilly Fume Per Sang 1992 - really nice and smooth. Top flight Sauvignon Blanc. Ready to drink. 90

(2)Verget, Puligny Montrachet Sous Puit 1995 - pretty young; nice flavor, but showing lots of acid. 87

(3) Clair, Chambertin Clos de Bize 1988 - rich flavor, but a bit monolithic with no real complexity. 85

(4) Chateau Mouton Rothchild 1979 - Surprise of the night. This was really good. Rich, complex, better than 1979 Margaux and Lafite in my humble opinion. 93
