I've been reading up extensively about red wine and all it's wonder health benefits. I do however, have one question:

I constantly see the statement "moderate consumption" yet I've not been able to find an exact or near-exact definition of "moderate consumption".

Can someone define, as well as possible, what "moderate consumption" means in terms of how often per week, daily, how many ounces, etc.?

I'm referring to red wine only.

Based on what I've read at a couple of online medical sites, the current definition of moderate consumption is one drink for women, two drinks for men (body weight and gender). These same sites consider a drink to be 5 ounces of wine, 12 ounces of beer or an ounce of 80 proof liquor.

Edit: To anyone who drinks more than that and considers this particular definition to be hogwash, don't shoot the messenger.

I think those are good guidelines. Maybe a way to personalize it a little more is to say that moderate consumption is how much a person can drink before being noticeably affected by the alcohol. For some, that means about three ounces, and for others, half a bottle.

I regard it as two glasses a day.

"Moderate" is a very inexact term. For my wife, it's about 1.5 glasses per day, depending on her activities each day, food consumption, etc. For me, it's about three glasses per day... but then, I outweigh her by nearly 100 lb. We work out for an hour each day, five days per week, and a "glass" to us is one-half of a Riedel Sommelier Bordeaux stem, or six ounces of wine. If the wine has 12.5% ABV, two glasses represents slightly less than 1.5 oz of alcohol. Tolerance is based on so many variables, esp. body mass, metabolism and exercise, that the word "moderate" is almost meaningless.

I agree with Hotwine's assessment about the many variables. More importantly, I am impressed that the old guy can work out an hour each day...

(Cough, wheeze....) Included is a 3-4 mile run (hack) and light (100 lb) weight work (ooomph!) Geezerhood is the pits.
