//In a recent editorial in The Wine Trader I complained about DHL, an overnight delivery firm, requiring i.d. from white-haired old farts. A lot of folks gave me a bad time, saying I should just be happy to get my shipment. I asked how they'd feel if they had to start producing i.d. for every drink at a bar, glass of wine at a restaurant or for every retail purchase...no matter their advanced years. Once again we got the arguments that we were paranoid, going over the top and indulging in hyperbole to make our points. Do you have any idea how tiring it gets to say, "I told you so"? JDM//

Dear Cur,

I ran into it today: the local Jewel Foods said I could not buy a bottle of wine without an i.d. even though I am now approaching 52. "Company Policy". Any comments? I hope to question the company point person and perhaps write about it.

Your in Easter

//It's just one more step in the demonizing of evil alcohol. Next step? They'll want to log all your alcohol purchases (the excuse will be so they can track people providing booze to minors - there's already such a law for purchases of keg beer in many states), which will no doubt dissuade little old lady school teachers or Baptist minister's wives from slipping a bottle of Sherry in the cart. Having to produce i.d., knowing their name is going on a log, etc., will just be too much for some purchasers. Come on...I'm waiting...tell me how I'm paranoid and it could never happen in the modern US of A. Curmy//

Once, in Albany, NY, I went into a convenience store intending to pick up a couple of bottles of those 6 percent wines that are legal in grocery stores in NY (just for experimental purposes).

Anyway, I was nearing fifty at the time. The owner asked for i.d. I laughed. He said he was serious. I said forget it mister, and put the wine back.

He said he was stung the night before by the police and he could take no chances. I informed him that the police succeeded in terrorizing him, and that he should not let them do that to him, but I could see him shaking in his shoes.
