I have no clue as what goes with anything, and was seeking some advice for a small gathering my wife is putting together with her friends...what wine would one serve with fresh fruits and a variety of vegetable appetizers

Hi Steve, and welcome to the Wine Board. If you want some fizz, Prosecco. If not, some Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi.

Prosecco was a big hit at a recent get together of mine.

If you have trouble finding the second wine recommended by Innkeeper, you might get a German Riesling Spatlese from the Mosel region such as Piesporter Goldtropfchen or Wehlener Sonnenuhr (look for the name Prum in the producer's name on the Wehlen wine--there are several in the Prum family who turn out a nice wine). The 2001 German Spatleses are generally slightly sweet and should match with the fruit. The Prosecco is also a good choice for the vegetable tidbits and fruit. Another sparkler (red) is the Brachetto d'Acqui. Banfi makes one called Rosa Regale that seems to be popular with women.

Have no problem with WOW's suggestion, but I think the Verdicchio may be easier to find than the Spatlese. It comes in an easy to recognize bottle sort of the shape of a women and sells for around $7, but we won't tell anybody.
