- mario21 - 06-14-2004 I am new to the wine industry wanting to know what wine goes best with chocolate or any kind of sweet? Please help. - Thomas - 06-15-2004 For chocolate a nice Ruby Port (or even a Tawny) but certainly a Late Bottled Vintage and, definitely, Banyuls. Some Madeira wines (Bual) do nicely with chocolate too. As for other sweets, problematic: takes a lot of experimentation, since many sweet wines are best as desserts on their own, but not all of them. With chocolate some of your choices are Port, Banyuls and some say late harvest Zinfandel but I haven't found that to work very well. With sweet desserts such as fruit tarts or pies or shortcake or non-chocolatey cookies, you might have a German Riesling Spatlese or Auslese, a Sauternes (France), a Muscat wine (from California or Italy--Moscato d'Asti). Banfi sells a sparkling red wine (Rosa Regale Brachetto d'Acqui) that seems to pair well with both chocolate and strawberry/raspberry desserts. (Banfi says it marries particularly well with dark or bittersweet chocolates.) - dananne - 06-15-2004 I'd second all suggestions, especially the Banfi. I'd also suggest Bonny Doon's Framboise, a raspberry "wine" that is delicious with chocolate. - winoweenie - 06-15-2004 Second all of the above especially the frambie! WW - californiagirl - 06-15-2004 Love the Framboise!! Also very keen on Bonny Doon's Orange Muscat, (don't remember their fancy name), goes good with dark chocolate. I've found, and you'll all probably think I'm a little different, that a good solid Merlot also goes quite well with dark chocolate. Oh yeah. Almost forgot. Villa Toscano's LH Zin is quite nice also.
