Tuesday, March 8, 4:30 - 7:30 pm - Austrian Night

Meet Johann Donabaum and Franz Josef Gritsch. These young men are really interesting: both are 26, went to the famous wine school in Krems, and have now taken over their own long-standing family wineries. Donabaum has been on the “best up-and-coming” list in the Wine Report for the past two years, and Gritsch was on it this year. Both make wines that are already scoring in the low-to-mid 90’s, and Donabaum won the Falstaff “Gruner Veltliner Cup” in 2003, besting out some of the most respected names in the country. This is their first visit to the US, and their wines will be making their California debut at VinoVenue. Don’t miss out on the chance to meet these energetic young winemakers. $5 per person.

Update!
Franz-Josef Gritsch and Johann Donabaum have brought with them another wine which they will have on hand at the tasting. It is a joint project between the two winemakers; a Gruner Veltliner called "Kalmuck". The name of the wine comes from the plaid jacket worn in this region (Lower Austria) which was traditionally made from the saddle blankets of a Mongolian tribe. The wine itself is a classic Gruner Veltiner, with all of the pepper, spice & mineral notes you'd expect, and is a joining of the two vintners winemaking philosophies.
As they also described it to me, it's Gruner Veltliner dressed up in a new tailored jacket ("Veltliner im Neuen G'wand")
