Hi All,
My girlfriend is turning 40 next month. She is quite a wine lover. I thought that perhaps getting her a nice 40 year old bottle of wine would be a good way of saying ... see, some things, like you, get better with age!

I'm wondering if those on this bulletin board might have a suggestion or 2 first, for what type of wine I might pursue and second, how best to go about finding said wine.

I enjoy wine, but am by no means a well informed wine drinker. Any guidance you can provide would be most appreciated.

I'm hoping to get away with less than $500, so I'd also like to know if I can get anything worth drinking for that. If not, how much should I expect to pay.

Thank you all very much.

Cheers - Jon

Go to www.wine-searcher.com and type in Graham's Porto and 1961 for the vintage. There is one available for $51.92, and a fairly large S&H since it will coming from the U.K.

Many outstanding wines came out of France in 1961, only problem being the price of most of them is now in the stratus-sphere! If your girlfriend likes ports, then IK's recommendation is a bargan for the price. If however she would prefer a top notch wine from France, then let me know, and I will try to hook you up. One example in your price range is a 61' Chateaneuf-du-pape, of which I know who recently purchased the last two remaining cases directly from Wildmans last year. One bottle remains for sale at retail, for $349. If you are interested in this one, or can give me a better idea of what wines your girlfriend likes to drink most, e-mail me and let me know.

hey there Dc and welcome to the board. You cunn't of had a fren' that was born in one of them "off" yars. 61, do be A GREAT year for Bordeaux, so lots of money. In today's market IMHO the two best values ( If the mention of money don' be a great deterrent) of the great 69 vintage are the Grauad-Larose , which I love and the L'Evangile. Both of these lil' buggers have withstood the ravages of time, travel, and tribulation. The Grauad is around 395 and if you're lucky you can find the L'Ev at under 300. Had this marvelous Pomerol in December with my 2 Grand-Daughters, a gran'-son, 3 some-thin-in-law-types an a couple of hangers-on that I still done' recoginize. WW
