'06 Tobin James "5" - Innkeeper - 09-29-2013

2006 Tobin James, Paso Robles, “5”; This was their first “5” which is a blend of the five Bordeaux grapes, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot, and Malbec. They all come from various Paso vineyards in various proportions. It lists for $55 and came with the spring ’09 wine club shipment; and weighs in at 14.4% alcohol.

It gave a ton of fruit on the nose and upfront. There was more ripe fruit and a touch of cassis in the complexity on the palate. The finish lingered nicely. We matched it beef tips Teriyaki, rice pilaf cooked in turkey stock, and a lovely salad mostly from our garden.

Popped the '07 tonight. Essentially the same blend and price. Alcohol level 14.6%. It came in the spring '10 shipment.

It was a sensational wine with much the same elements of the previous vintage. We match it with seared and roasted (quickly) rib eye steak, roasted red potatoes and salad. Yum!

Popped the '08 last night. It is still listed at $55 but came in the spring 2011 club shipment; alcohol 14.8% by volume. The makeup of this bottling is: Merlot 28%, Petit Verdot 28%, Malbec 22%, Cabernet Sauvignon 20%, Cabernet Franc 2%. This is a wonderful wine that is loaded with a wide variety of fruit, a nice touch of oak, and a lingering finish.

We matched it with smoked brisket and salad. Yum!

Second half last night with rib lamb chops grilled over charcoal and pecan chips, mashed potatoes, and salad. Yum!
