When I came to the site today, I was not logged in and got no lights, but there were some March 2 postings without lights. So I logged in and got a warning that there was a security problem with the site and it was recommended that I go away, or log in at my own risk. What's going on?

Yes, I also ran across this. There is no real security risk. The issue is that the SSL (secure socket layer) certificate has expired and the renewal has not gone through yet. When you log in, you are on a "secure" page (https://) instead of a regular web page (http://). This is just a level of protection that was put in place to protect users passwords but it is really not necessary.

It is just a matter of purchasing a renewal for the certificate. But I agree that the warning is VERY off-putting. I have alerted Alex that this needs to be renewed ASAP -- not because it is a danger but because it looks scary to users. It's really not dangerous at all and you can comfortably click on the "exception". You're not putting a credit card in the browser... just a passsword. But the SSL certificate will be renewed ASAP, I believe.
