OK, gang, I've got the CFO's approval and will sign with a contractor on Monday to frame out a new shop building, which will include a 10'x24'x10' wine room. He'll pour the slab, frame it and deck it, and I'll finish it out. It will probably take at least a month (if not six) to get to the point of being able to work on the wine room, and I'll use Dr. Gold's handy-dandy little book as reference, "How and Why to Build a Wine Cellar". Any words of wisdom you'd care to offer would be welcome. Since the inside walls will not be load-bearing, the width could be increased, but the one building needs to also contain a garage bay for the truck, an equipment bay for lawn & garden equipment, as well as the workshop, within the overall dimensions of 24'x34'. So I'm thinking 10'x24' for juice should be enough, eh wot? (The excitement builds! <IMG SRC="http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif">)

10x24 is pretty damn big! The new home we bought (and undergoing a 5 month remodel before we move in) will have a 10x12 cellar with a center island to hold 300 more bottles.

Hotsie-Poo that sounds like a perfect addition to me. Mine is 36' with 4' higher ceilings. I had my son-in-law use 1X12" tongue-in-grooved planks to create 18"X18" diamonds. I think the most critical part of the process both for mine and yours is the insulation. I can assure you that this sucker stays +or- 2 degrees regardless what the outside temp is and from 50 to 75% humidity. We used 2" of solid insulation then 3 6-1/2" of fiberglass on all walls and the ceiling. I carpeted the floor ( which has saved MEENY dropped bottles ). In the 19 years I've been here it has performed better than any-one could imagine. You'll have 'nuff room to ax-chully buy wines in major quantities. With racking on both sides you should be able to store 3-3500 bottles. HAVE FUN. WW

WW, I'm trying not to mention capacity to her. She'll know that I plan to fill that sucker up, and suddenly decide she needs half of it for her artsy crap!<BR>I prefer diamond bins; that's what I built for the old hot-house storm cellar. But this one will be used primarily for long-term storage since it's 100 yards from the house, so I'm thinking maybe simple shelves to hold full cases would be more practical. I dunno. Rolling shelves are really nice, but would drive up the cost enough to get her attention. Anyway, it will be a while before a decision must be made.<BR>Bucko, be glad you're remodeling BEFORE moving in. We're remodeling too (and have been for three long years), and can't get rid of the superfine sawdust that's suspended in the air. You dust everything, and look at it an hour later and it's covered again. It's drivin' us nuts! (Short trip these days.)<BR>Lots of trees to trim, to even get a cement truck into the back of this place.<BR>

Hmm, cogitatin' & rethinkin'. All I need is a nice space for maybe 1200-1500 btls. Maybe I'll cut it back to 10'x12'. We were fortunate to find a fine old property on six wooded acres, in town, 5 minutes from our offices. The interior has literally been stripped to sheet rock and bare floors -- no trim, no doors, no cabinets, no plumbing..... you get the idea. We took out a lot of walls, moved doors, made it all flow better.<P>The 9x9 wine cellar became 9x12 by making an unneeded closet disappear. I figure that with the center island/tasting table I can get around 1900 or so bottles in it, which is a manageable sized cellar. At one time my cellar was pushing 2600 bottles but I just could not keep up with it. Too many wines getting too old, so I sold several hundred bottles at Winebid.com and now keep it around 1800 bottles. Just something to think about, Gil.

That's good cogitatin' fodder, Randy, thanks. With our consumption rate of only a bottle per night (unless we have company), that sounds much more reasonable.<P>Sounds like a neat place you're working on. We bought this place on 1 1/2 ac 14 years ago, but did little to it until three years ago, when we totally remodeled a bath. Now we've glassed in the back porch as a sunroom with Italian tile floor, installed more tile in some rooms of the house, hardwood floors in others, added custom wainscoting in LR & DR, repainted, new lighting, new driveway, front landscaping, etc. Still have the kitchen to go, plus one bath, and the new shop bldg. But none of that is as drastic as what you described!

bucko....2600 bottle? wow. As a wine infant I was proud to have 4 bottles in the house at once! hee hee.<P>plus, it sounds like our budgets are in no proximity to each other!!<P>tk
