It's here! YEE-haw!

- winoweenie - 02-15-2001

Praise the Lord and pass the sweaty bottles. WW

- hotwine - 02-15-2001

It's got to rest for another 24 hours before turning it on, to stabilize the refrigerant. Then I'll start the chore of removing each bottle from the moldy storm cellar, wiping it down with vinegar to remove as much of the mold as possible, then placing it in its new home in the cabinet.
The redwood & steel sliding shelves were packaged separately in a box, and received damage to the redwood facade on each (cracked & splintered pretty badly). Informed my saleslady at Wine Enthusiast and she said they will totally replace all of those six shelves, apologizing profusely for the inconvenience.
So far, I'm very impressed, both with the product and the vendor.

- hotwine - 02-15-2001

I failed to mention the prerequisites CINCHOUSE laid on me for installing it in the garage:
1. Remove everything from the garage - and I mean everything.
2. Pressure-wash, then bleach, then acidize, then paint the concrete floor. (Due to drying requirements after each step, this whole process took about 10 days.)
3. Paint the interior garage walls (after washing/wiping them down).
I got it all done prior to delivery except for painting some of the garage walls - but I did at least finish the corner where we installed the unit.
Whew!

- Drew - 02-15-2001

First we got to REST the wine....now we have to REST the Eurocave, what's next
Drew

- hotwine - 02-15-2001

Yeah, that's what I thought. But the owner's manual clearly advises resting the unit for 48 hours after delivery before throwing the switch. Oh, well. I'm only now, after seeing the unit, coming up with an organizational matrix in my head for the wines. The old layout in the storm cellar was so simple: D-Rack A, Bins 1-20, French. D-Rack B, Bins 1-20, French and German.
D-Rack C, Bins 1-20, Italian, Spanish and CA. Each D-rack can hold about 14 cases in diamond bins. Then there are the bookcase type racks consisting of six shelves each, which can handle two enclosed cases on each shelf. (Not all bins or shelves are full by any means; only have about 350 btls on hand.) Now I've got to re-order the whole blippin' thing, including bottle location information in the database. This will be interesting to keep straight....

The oil that is used to lubricate the compressor can become mixed with the refrigerant gases. If this happens and you start the unit, the oil that should be in the compressor ends up in the evaporator.
No oil in the compressor means no lubrication, and that means failure.
So let the unit sit, then all the juices will settle out. The refrigerant will end up where it belongs and the oil will stay in the compressor.
Hotwine, you said CINCHOUSE. You was USN!!??

- hotwine - 02-16-2001

Nope. Army (Inf.) many moons ago.

- chittychattykathy - 02-17-2001

Now this sounds like a NICE toy. Enjoy!

- RAD - 03-03-2001

Hot,
How is the new Eurocave working out? I just ordered a Double Comfort on 2/28, the last day of the sale. Should be here in a week or so.
RAD

- hotwine - 03-03-2001

It's working great, RAD. It's a very fine-looking cabinet, and the temp is holding a consistent 56 deg. The replacement redwood shelves arrived a few days ago, with damage to only one, and it's salvagable. Suggest you look your unit over carefully when it arrives. And be sure to open the separate box containing the shelves, and inspect them while the shipper's rep is present (I was amazed at the poor packaging that allowed the box's contents to rattle around). The instruction booklet says to let the unit settle for a couple of days, and I did that, even though it meant I couldn't put power to it to check its operation for that period. Yet when I did turn it on, it worked fine. My unit is a 260 but is pretty well stuffed with about 120 bottles. (Admittedly, some are PN/Burgundy and Champagne, rather than all Bordeaux, which is the bottle size it's spec'd for. And the sliding shelves and heavy-duty cooling unit reduce total capacity.) I'm very pleased, and already thinking semi-seriously about ordering a second unit six months to a year from now. (She'd kill me if I mentioned that at this point!)
Here's hoping all goes well with yours.

- RAD - 03-03-2001

Hot,
Thanks for the advice on the shelves; I did order an extra 6 of the sliding ones, so we'll see how they arrive. I'll definitely check while the shipper is there. I'll keep you posted.
RAD

- RAD - 03-07-2001

Well Hot,
The Eurocave Double Comfort arrived today! 520 bottle capacity at max configuration. I bought an extra 6-pack of the sliding shelves, so I'm not sure what exactly my capacity will ultimately be.
Thanks for the heads-up on the shelves; mine arrived intact and without damage. Now I'm letting the whole thing settle for 48 hrs, and then I'm cranking it up!
Now that I have some extra room for wine--and my wife can't give me the excuse of "there's no more room in the apartment"--I can get back on the trail and buy some more wine!
RAD

- Bucko - 03-07-2001

Congrats on the unit, RAD! It is definitely downhill for you! I purchased a Vinotique 700 bottle, sure that it would hold me. Then came a second, then a third, then, with no more room in the garage for units, a 60-case walk-in locker in a wine storage unit in Seattle..... aaarrrggghhh!!!
VerySickBucko

- Kcwhippet - 03-08-2001

Just got an email from Wine Enthusiast. they're having a minor sale on Eurocave. The 170 is $1020 off. Still sounds like an awful lot of money to store wine, though. Fortunately, I have a nice little enclosed space in the north facing corner of the cellar that can hold up to 1300 bottles. The current temp is 55, and it goes up to about 60 in the middle of the summer.

- Innkeeper - 03-08-2001

Only problem in our cellar au nautural is that the labels come off. So we keep a couple or few of those dehumidifier things around. The damn things cost $10 a piece though.
[This message has been edited by Innkeeper (edited 03-08-2001).]

- hotwine - 03-08-2001

You don't have a problem, KC. If I had a temp range like that in my old storm cellar, I'd be deliriously happy.
Instead, I'm just delirious.
El Bucko is the one who needs help. Obviously, it's time for him to trade houses, or at least remodel, to accommodate the growing family... he doesn't have room for all those poor children at home, and has to put some of 'em up at a motel.
BTW congrats, RAD. I'm sure you'll enjoy your Eurocave. Let us know how many bottles you're able to stuff in that sucker.
[This message has been edited by hotwine (edited 03-08-2001).]

- winoweenie - 03-09-2001

Hotsie=poo, If the capacity is 520 I have all the faith in the world that Rad will manage to cram 537 in and then start complaining to the boss that he needs more room, RIGHT BUCKSTER? ww

- Bucko - 03-09-2001

Naw.... RAD is a REAL man, he'll just do it and take his lumps......
Bucko

- hotwine - 03-09-2001

Man, that kind of lump lasts for years! Like the time I bought my last truck: I left one Saturday morning to "go shopping" and returned at noon; sat down and had lunch with wife & daughter, then nonchalantly asked wife to go with me to New Braunfels (about 40 miles away).
"Why in the world do we need to go there?"
"To pick up my truck."
(pause) "How did you get home?"
"In my truck."
(pause, then she bolts for the door to check the driveway.)
"Where the hell did that come from?"
"New Braunfels."
"Where's your old one?"
"New Braunfels. That's why we need to go up there, to drive it home."
"What are you going to do with two trucks?"
"I've already sold the old one; just need to have it here to be picked up."
Whoo-weee, Frosty the Snowman would have felt right at home in this house! Especially since I had done the same thing a few years earlier.....
That's really not so bad.... My grandfather once put Grandma on the train to go visit relatives for the weekend. When he picked her up at the depot Sunday evening, they drove to a different house across town.
"What are we dong here?" she asked.
"We're livin' here", he answered.
"But whose house is this?"
"It's your house. Your things are already inside."
He had sold the old house, bought another, and moved 'em, lock, stock & barrel, in a weekend.
I told wife that story and she just glared at me.
The poor woman has no sense of humor...
