I am looking for a Cognac or some sort of distilled wine drink for after Christmas dinner. I figured it would be something the majority of my family would enjoy when we are mulling around after overeating. I am completely foreign to this variety, so any helpful suggestions, with average prices would be welcome.

Hennessey or Remy Martin XO is our choice. It goes for a $100 a bottle, but is is smooth as a baby's backside......

Something a little sweeter but very smooth: try Benedictine. Or if you want a little more punch to it try: B&B (Benedictine and Brandy). Or give the Bonney Prince's favorite drink a try: Drambouie.

The aforementioned Hennessey or Remy Martin XO are, indeed, wonderful Cognacs. You could also give the VSOP a shot (pun intended).

You might also want to think about a fine Sherry or Port as an alternative to your after dinner spirits. Rather than being distilled, the are fortified wines and are also quite good for sipping after dinner.

A couple of alternatives to cognac, in addition to Port:
- A nice Sauternes to accompany dessert, something like Ch. de Suduiraut, at about $75.
- Coffee with Cointreau. This has been my preferred after-dinner drink for years. Simply toss an ounce of Cointreau into a standard cup of coffee (without cream or sugar).

Cognac would make me want to light up a fine cigar, which would start WW III all over again in my household on the issue of smoking (I quit 10 years ago, and still miss it "after" things..... after dinner, after a shower, after waking in the morning, after ..... whatever.)

I have indeed thought about port. They have a taylor 94 lbv at the liquor store for under 20. They don't let wine stores carry port around here so the selection is limited [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/frown.gif[/img]. As of yet, I have not ventured into the world of sherry. Keep the cognac, armagmac, etc suggestions coming, You folks are the greatest.

Sherry is certainly a wonderful "sticky" (fortified wine). We frequently use it as an aperitif, and Harvey's Bristol Creme is really tough to beat for that purpose. But for an after-dinner drink, we would go with a Port or the coffee w/Cointreau. "Rusty Nails" and "Stingers" also have their uses after dinner, but we reserve those for the occasions when we must sit through a long presentation following a business dinner.
(And thankfully, we rarely attend such functions any more.)

Check out the HARDY's Whiskers Blake Tawny Port. From Austrailia, not Portugal, but very nice.

Retails here in Virginia Beach for less than $20.00 at about $18.90.

I like Hennessey XO too. If you can locate some, try Bisquit or Martell XO Cognac. And do not rule out Grappa produced by Nonino. They offer a number of different types, but they are difficult to find.
