Hey guys, I'd like to just suggest that we try to engage newbies to the forum by giving them the benefit of the doubt first. Donnaclif was an obvious front to veer folks to another site, but if someone is new and pulls a stunt like that one the first post, let's just set some nice, but firm rules and ask them politely to post on the advertising thread instead of playing cop. Not that I don't get a kick out of it, but I've noticed new folks to the site are substantially down and perhaps that could be due to intimidation. Its just a thought and I do appreciate what we are all trying to do which is just talk about wine and have some fun doing it. When the new site goes live in days from now, and we start pumping traffic into the website, I'm actually going to get on the horn to call some old Forum folks up who haven't posted in ages and see if they'd entertain coming back.

The only posters that should be intimidated are the trolls that are unmasked. Hopefully there are many lurkers that don't post but get the answers they're looking for by reading past posts. The one thing that has always impressed me on this venue is all newbies are greeted and treated with kindness. I may be the bigest jerk in the world (and probably am) but I'm tremendously interested in giving any knowledge I have freely and kindly. I just have no patience with people who come on the board with their own agenda. I think that some of the folks who have quit posting are not only not posting here, but as Foodie pointed out, have quit posting period. WW

I understand. WW and Foodie you and the other guys are a treasure trove of knowledge in the world of wine. I learn a lot about wines just reading your posts and I have always loved this board. I'll do my best to make sure and help keep the trolls out and please don't take my post personally, it wasn't directed atcha specifically. Just trying to keep it real, that's all.

No offense taken personally. I've been insulted by experts so when an amatuer throws one at me it rolls offn' me back like water off a duck. WW

WW doesn't even know when he's being insulted--that's one of the drawbacks to not having a white wine gene

PW, it' difficult to hold one's tongue when the spam is so obvious. But that's because of all the spam experience I have on my blog.

The scenario is the same: someone makes a first post in which nothing is really asked or said, except something truly vague, but the post ends with a URL. People are paid to send others to certain Web sites, and some people do it because they are part of the Web site operation. It's a particularly slimy form of PR.

Yeah guys, I cannot tell you how many people are out there being paid to spam forums. Heck I got one good butt whipping once or twice on this very board when I first got started. I liken it to having a protective parent. Its a sign of good honest folks watchin' over things. The good thing is that I don't feel intimidated by asking questions on this board. I can see the traffic is up substantially though, which is a good sign. We're almost there guys with the new site, which highlights the forum and a nice wiki which will replace the encyclopedia...

I drunked one of them wikis onced. They be potent juice. WW

PW,

I thought you were emailing a sample of the new site.

Foodie, I am but I'm embarrassed to say the new site has so many bugs that we need to iron them out before sending you guys the link for testing. Trust me, its going to knock you'se guys socks off... I hope!
