How long does a red and white wine last for before it starts to go bad?

There are way too many variables to answer that question. Which red or white wine? How much did it cost? How are you going to be storing it, and how was it stored before you got it? Do you like wines very young or very old - or somewhere in between?

First off, most wines made are meant to be drunk young. Only a small percentage are meant to be aged, and those are apt to cost considerablt more than you'll probably want to spend. At that, almost all of the agers are red wines. Since heat (and to a lesser extent light) is an enemy of wine, you have to store the wine in a cellar with optimal temps - near 55 F. If we both have the very same wine - even an inexpensive one - and I store mine in my cellar while yours is in the cupboard over the stove, mine will probably outlast yours by years.

So, let us know what particular wine you have in mind and we can probably tell you how long it will last.
