Slam Dunk! The wine that put me into the grapes insted of refined potatoes was the 73 Sterling Reserve. At the San Fransisco market in 76(Jan) took my usual contingent to dinner at Vics and they had an aggressive you sommelier who, after consulting with our waiter on our order, came to the table, introduced himself, and said " With the steaks you've ordered I have the perfect beverage. " After exhausting their 4 bottle supply i was hooked. WW

Tough question. But I would have to say it was a home-grown red wine (likely Zinfandel) made by an immigrant who lived next door to our Brooklyn tenement. I was seven or eight, and it was a revelation that had me interested in wine from then on.

Over the years so many wines have served to reinforce my interest.

Since the edit function appears to be malfunctioning, let me add I meant not to say home-grown wine but homemade; Zinfandel did not grow in Brooklyn, as far as I know.

One was a 1978 Val di Suga, Brunello di Montalcino, bought in 1985 for $13, and consumed in 1995. Just thinking about it brings back the finish.

Happiness is having an '89 in the cellar that is ready to go this year. Purchase price was about $12 higher or close to twice as much as the '78.

Most memorable occasion(s) would be Thanksgiving at Gramps' house, (KC's dad). Every year I would be allowed 1 glass of red wine with dinner, despite my mother's protests. (I believe that lasted until I was 15 when we relocated to Calif.)

Can't recall the most memorable bottle, but the wine from glenora keeps coming to mind. Dr. K Frank Reisling and Glenora Dry Reisling. First time I actually started being able to identify scents and flavors in wine. (Stickies are easy for me, wines, not so much.)

For a sampling (not a full bottle but a small pour at a tasting) the following stand out: a Montrachet sampled in the 70's in a wine appreciation course at University of Maryland, a taste of Bonnes Mares at a wine tasting with Alex Gambal in Nantucket, and a taste of 1999 Clos de Beze in Raleigh.
For a full bottle: a Valpolicella Amarone, a Rulander and Scheurebe Eiswein, and a Lorenzhofer Karlsmuhle Eiswein.

I don't remember the exact wine, but I had a friend in the mid 60's who used to come over occasionally after work. Before we reached the house we used to stop at a shop which had a very good supply of Bordeaux, and we'd go in and pick up about 3 or 4 bottles recommended by the owner. All the wines were at or under $10, and they were a revelation because before we first went into that shop we'd usually pick up some of the usual suspects back then - Bolla, Blue Nun, Lambrusco, etc. I lagged after we lost touch in the late 60's, but when I was in the Anchorage Restaurant in Milwaukee in 1973, it was suggested we have a Mondavi Fume Blanc with the fish we were having, and that rekindled the interest, which hasn't lagged since - just ask cg.

For me it was a 1993 Chateau St. Jean Cinq Cepages consumed at sunset on the water with my wife on one of the piers at the Bluewater Bay resort near Egland Air Force Base in Florida (Destin Area)...just call me a romantic, certainly was the moment and the wine. No Cialis needed.

There have been a few. Just a couple:

Bordeaux with escargot at La Forgot, a French restaurant in Nha Trang, with three other second balloons in Dec '67. Danged .45 in its shoulder holster kept bangin' my chest whenever I reached for the bottle.

Lafite with Chateaubriand at the Fig Tree on the San Antonio River Walk in Jul '75 while courting Debra. Met the week before, married in London three months later (Halloween).

Can't remember the vintage of either wine, but they were both spectacular.
