Brappy,
My sister lives in West Des Moines. Were you visiting relatives in Iowa or business trip?

I attended an annual party that's been going on for 25 years now. Some of our friends have moved out of the area, but they make the hour drive to attend. It's so much fun to see them. We did a "tailgate theme' which translated to anything goes. I made slow cooker barbecued pork served on rolls with coleslaw and dill pickles. It turned out really good. If you'd like the recipe go to http://www.recipezaar.com/95238

Teach, you have got to be kidding!!! I looked at the recipe and according to the Nutrition Facts they show the amount of bad stuff is incredible - 863 calories, 42.5 g fat, 215 mg cholesterol, 1386 mg sodium per serving!!! That has to be a mistake. Even though it says that's per serving, it has to be at least for the entire pot.

Yes, I think that has to be wrong because besides the pork itself, there's not any other fat in the thing. Not to mention, the servings are very small to fit on a small sandwich bun. Maybe they included the bread in the calories? And as far as wine at the party, there were a few bottles there that I paid no attention to since I couldn't partake. Besides, I'm certain they were made from sour grapes.

Since when is BBQ health food? aarrgghh

I could give rat's arse about the nutritional benefits as I'm slamming down a rack of baby backs.

Jane,
Grandma passed away last week. So Hattie and I went to the funeral. And although a sad event, it was good to see family.

Had I known your sister lived there, I would have asked for recs on dining spots. Not much in Des Moines. BTW, I thought she lived in Nebraska. Don't know why I thought that.

Mark,
We grew up in Lincoln, Nebraska but my sister's husband has a dental practice in
West Des Moines. They do know about the better restaurants in West Des Moines and Des Moines.
I'm sorry about your grandmother. It seemed like my Dad's family (six brothers and sisters) only got together at funerals.
