Well we finally got mom-in-law out of the hospital and back into rehab care after a nasty bout with a GI bacteria infection that she got while in rehab . A very close friend of mine passed yesterday, old police buddy of many years the two of us supervising the Police Marine Unit. I'll miss him very much. On top of this we're going to the new Hippodrome Theater in Baltimore to see "Phantom of the Opera" and dining first at "Charlestons Restaurant" in the Inner Harbor East area of the Baltimore Harbor. You gotta go to the web site and see the wine library...unbelievable. Will report on the food and wine later. http://www.charlestonrestaurant.com/mainpage.html

This lady sounds like she can find the flour in the pantry. Their red wine list must be down for revision but I'll try again later. Have fun and, Eileen dear, order ennythin' your heart desires on the list. Youse deserves it. WW

You've had a full plate, Drew. Glad mom-in-law is one the mend, but sorry about the passing of your old bud. Hard to take, when it's someone you've worked with for years.

Was going to offer sympathies for being dragged to a fancy-shmancy dinner and theater until I checked that Website. That really looks nice! And the wine guy seems to understand Riedel and pairings. Should be really interesting.... even worth being dragged to the theater afterward.

Darned nice wine list but someone ought to take them out back and beat the snot out of them for the ridiculous prices -- outrageous!

Yes the wine prices are frightening. Arrived a little late due to storms in the area. Seated in one of the Cellar rooms, very nice. Food was amazing with the crispy cornmeal crusted oysters w/lemon cayenne mayo that were mind altering (if you like oysters). Wild rockfish, lamb chops and a perfectly prepared aged filet mignon were enjoyed by all. The food and service was perfect. Only 3 drank wine so we ordered a 2001 Rosenblum "Rockpile Road" to accompany the grilled wild rockfish and my grilled lamb chops. The kitchen changed the accompanying sauces by adding red wine to better match with the wine which was a very good pairing for all dishes. The wine was big, spicy and delicious with a very long finish, although much too expensive at $78.

The food sounds outa'-sight. Someone should send them a wine pricelist from Plumpjacks San Fran operation. Would make them hang their heads in shame. WW

Drew, I may be dining there on September 14th. Tried once before but they are closed on Sundays. I did stop in one night and have a glass of a syrah rose' in the lounge area and chatted with a bartender who is into jazz. I like the Rosenblum Rockpile (somewhere around $30 retail at a shop in DC but available for about $20-$22 in some California wine shops) but my present favorite is the Rosenblum Harris Kratka, also on the list at Charleston.
I am going to be in Maryland to attend an Orioles game with a friend from College Park on September 10th (her church group got a bloc of tickets). Then on the 11th I am flying to Iowa to see my sister, brother-in-law and my mother. I will leave my car at Sallie's house or at the BWI Airport. Will fly back on the 14th and stay overnight before I drive back to NC. Therefore, I thought this would be an opportunity to try dinner at Charleston Restaurant. I have already dined at Petit Louis Bistro (restaurant under same chef). Limited menu but good food and nice selective wine list. Not as expensive a place as Charleston Restaurant.

WW, the red wine list is working now.

Sounds like quite a place. I'll have to remember it next time I am down that way--maybe by then the wine prices will have been rethought.

Yup. And pigs'll fly.
