Had a few friends drop by for dinner one night. We popped the following bottles.

2004 Kistler Chardonnay - slightly off dry, lacking some balanced, tropical fruits, but not very long.

2005 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese Erste Lage - Wonderfully ripe nose, full of honey, boytrytis, citrus. On the palate, a full smooth mouthfeel, long finish and very fresh. Perhaps a bit sweeter than the Spatlese definition but solid bottle

1990 Chapoutier Hermitage - This bottle was more advanced than the others that I've had so it might just be this bottle. Most have still be dark garnet in color but his one was definitely lighter and more translucent and definitely bricking. Nose had more developed secondary and tertiary notes, tobacco, leather, herbs, in a very balanced and ethereal manner. Lovely really despite lacking some of the dense fruit that the other bottles had. Hoping though that this was the only bottle in this state of my case

2001 E Guigal Hermitage - Bottle needed time on opening to blow off some funkiness but afterwards, turned out to be a decent bottle with sufficient complexity, balance and elegance. Definitely has a nice lifting nose, elegant, with good secondary notes, on palate, medium body but with a good acidity to give wine some lift and a nice presence. Unfortunately opened with a Rostaing Cote Rotie and a '90 Chapoutier Hermitage and both outshone this one on this particular day but a nice enough bottle by itself

2000 Rene Rostaing Cote Rotie - Very deep red for the vintage but has lost some of the vibrancy of its youth. Very concerntrated still, sweet red fruits and berries, full bodied, veyr nice smooth mouthfeel. Perhaps a bit four square but still impressive in its depth.

1999 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva - It stood up quite well ot the Rhone wines. Lighter than the French wines, with with a light and slighlty oaky nose, purfumed, and attractive. Needed a good hour to open up. A good high toned acidity keeps wine fresh cedar, leathery, very typical rioja and very much appreciated by the dinner crowd. Medium finish, solid rioja but not much beyond that.

2003 Pesquera Reserva - A really nice solid bottle for an 03, deep red, good concentration and sufficient complexity to keep things interest. Nice level of acidity too to keep wine fresh.

1999 Dominus - Opened up slightly renticent, close and muted. After about 30 minutes though, this thing blossomed! Great Juice! Red berries and cherries, some darker riper berries, coco. Smooth, round, with some lift, long, dense, ripe, and very balanced. Long finish and great persistence.

1999 La fleur de Boudard - Classic bordeaux proportions on the nose and the palate. Solid wine with good density, acidity to keep things feel and nicely made. Good counter point to the Californian but not to the same level.

2003 Pintia - Very forward and solid, definitley new world for this wine from the house of Vega Scilia.

2004 Alion - This wine is very structured and almost everyone at dinner said that I committed infanticide. Solid structure, cruchy, tannic, solid dark fruits, not showing much complexity right now, tightly wound.

My friends still had some energy but I was running so as an indication to close out dinner, I pulled out a Scotch

Glenmorangie Nectar D'or: VERY SMOOTH, SUPER SMOOTH!!! incredible mouthfeel, just so smooth. Sauternes casks used was very evident as a seasoning to this scotch. Having said that those of you who like peat will not find this to be very satisfying as it stays clearly in the fruity and smooth area.

Oh yeah...dinner....

2x Sturgeons
Paella Valencia
Pan seared foie gras on bagette and truffles
A host of tapas....

my house was a mess for days but definitley worth it with a good bunch of good friends.

Quite a line up Engineer. On the wines from the 90's did you buy at release or on a secondary market?

Holy-Moly! I put on 4 pounds just reading this line-up. Some really nice bottles plus the food is to die-fer. WW

Thanks! I had bought a WHOLE foie gras and did not even get a bite!! The other things that we had, now that I'm awake...

10 pounds (yes 10 pounds) of fresh live shrimp (10-15 count size), that were still jumping flown in from NYNY's harbours that we ate

1/3 sashimi style,
1/3 baked with garlic
1/3 pan seared
Some tempura'd

On top of that 3 pounds further of more shimp made into a tapas, gambas al ajillo

Fritata Patatas (a whole dozen eggs)

Appetizer platter consistent of
- pound of olives
- pound of marinated mushrooms
- 3 pounds of Manchego
- a whole pile of mini stuffed peppers

- 3 pounds of hand made meatballs in a spicy tomato sauce ....

A tomato watermelon salad that made everyone scared to try but turned out to be absolutely delish

And then there was desert:

12" Velvet cake
12" Tiramisu Cheesecake
12 litre VAT of Coconut with Toro and tapioca

..........

There was 14 people...........5 were kids.....

It was a rather hedonistic night.......

suffice to say, I did not eat any breakfast the next day!!!
