yes, as my subject suggests, I am new at this whole wine thing. I'm a college kid seeking to expand my cultural horizons by learng about something other than cheap beer and well drinks. I've always figured that the value of a wine is a matter of personal taste. However, I'd like to become familiar with the (what I'm guessing are) standarized conventions of what makes a wine a wine, a merlot a merlot, a brut a brut, etc. Any help would be appreciated.

Hello SR,

Welcome to the wineboard. What you are asking is an arduous task for us. I would suggest, if you really are interested, getting the book "Great wine made simple" by Andrea Immer or if you belong to Netflix or an online rental place put the word wine into the search engine. There are a few dvd's out there that will help you.

To answer your questions: Merlot is a grape and there are over 300 more of them. Brut is a style - it actually refers to the amount of sugar in the Champagne.

Here is a run down of the most common grapes out there. Don't be daunted by the list - you have many years to explore this world!

Hi SR and welcome to the board. Our talented chief moderator Jackie has put together an immensely informative compilaton that deals with just about all aspects of wine. Go to the front page and go to the thread that deals with whatever question you have. WW

wineguruchgo, I've been humbled by your response. Thanks for the info, it was a lot more than I expected, enticing rather than daunting. I've been reading a few things online, and picked up a couple of books. I'm actually going to a wine tasting this friday, and thanks to your help will at least have a foundation knowledge. I'd raise my glass in appreciation, but I doubt you'd see it, its also 2 in the afternoon.
Thanks again.

Let us know how the wine tasting goes on Friday. What's your favorite wine?

No problem SR. It's my pleasure. That's why we are here.

Come back often and ask many questions. This can be a very confusing field yet so fun to explore!
