Thinking about a vinotemp cellar - any feedback on the brand? Any other recommendations?

I've not read anything against Vinotemp. But keep in mind that a free-standing unit will exhaust into the room, raising the room's temperature somewhat; and the fan will run continuously, the compressor intermittently, generating a low-level but persistent "noise floor" in the house that some people might find objectionable.
Since you're in the Bay Area, you probably don't need to worry about high summer temperatures, like we contend with in South Texas; those conditions drove me a couple of years ago to choose a EuroCave 260 with "extreme" option, so it could be installed in our garage. It was the only unit I could find that was designed to survive in 90 degree plus temperatures.
So long as the room in which your unit will be installed reaches a temperature no higher than about 77 degrees, the Vinotemp should be able to maintain 57 degrees for optimum wine storage.

I have had my vinotemp for nearly 2 years. I have lived in southern Idaho and the willamette valley with it. Idaho gets some darn hot temps and this summer has been very warm here, but my vinotemp has kept my wine at a very steady temp around the 55 degree target area. Its a good brand from my experiance.

I lived in Livermore which is next door to Pleasanton in the Livermore Valley. We had many days of 100+ plus weather every summer. The only way to keep a room at 77 during the summer is to crank the A/C.

Yow! I didn't realize it got so hot that close to the coast.
Looks like we'll finally hit 100 here tomorrow - we've had an unusually cool summer, with highs only in the upper 90's.

It's not that close. There are three ridge lines between the Livermore Valley and the eastern edge of San Francisico Bay. It's an east west valley that's wider ont the west end. So, it gets really hot during the day and the breeze off the bay cools it down at night. If I remember, this time of year it's about 90 during the day and 55 at night.
